T178 LED bulbs: the vertical tubular that draws a line of light
The T178 E27 LED bulb solves a very specific problem: there are spaces where a globe looks out of scale and a standard bulb falls short. At around 178 millimetres long and with a narrow bulb, this large decorative LED bulb does not light like a point, but like a vertical line. That change of geometry is its whole reason for being and what makes it irreplaceable in narrow fittings, vertical wall lights and arrangements where height matters more than volume.
What a T178 bulb is and what size it has
The T identifies the long tubular shape and, in decorative formats like this one, the figure corresponds to the approximate length of the bulb in millimetres: some 17.8 centimetres of glass, plus the large thread E27 base of 27 millimetres. The result is a slender piece, far taller than it is wide, with the LED filament running lengthwise along the tube. Unlike globes, which take up space in every direction, the T178 concentrates its presence on the vertical axis and barely needs any width. It offers between 15,000 and 25,000 hours of service life compared with the 1,000 or 2,000 of an incandescent, and being a filament its contribution is decorative: between 300 and 800 lumens, below the 800 to 1100 of an opal LED of the same wattage.
Where the 178 mm tubular is used
Choose the T178 when the vertical rules the space:
- Narrow pendant fittings and long glass tubes, where a globe simply would not fit.
- Vertical wall lights beside mirrors, headboards and in corridors.
- Columns of light over bar counters and long dining or meeting tables.
- Shop windows and display units, following the height of the product without hiding it.
Its best trick is grouping. Three, five or seven units hung in a row at different heights create a stepped rhythm that fills the air over a counter or a long table without blocking the view: the eye passes between the tubes. In a single fitting, the lit filament reads as a clean, almost graphic stroke of light.
How to choose your T178 LED bulb
Measure the available height first, because those 17.8 centimetres determine the lampholder and the distance down to the table. Then choose the wattage according to the number of points: with several units grouped together you do not need high wattages, while a single tubular as the main light calls for more power or the support of another source. Colour temperature sets the mood: 2200K vintage amber for a very warm, decorative tone, 2700K or 3000K warm white for hospitality, living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K neutral white for work areas and 6000K cool white only for technical uses. Consider whether you want it dimmable, something only the references prepared for it state on their spec sheet: on a row of tubulars over a table, dimming the intensity turns the scene from meeting to after dinner. And pay attention to the glass finish, because on such an exposed bulb it counts for a lot: clear shows the filament sharply, and amber or smoked soften the glare when the bulb sits at eye level.

Frequently asked questions about T178 LED bulbs
What does T178 mean on a bulb?
The T indicates that the bulb is long and tubular and, in this decorative format, the 178 corresponds to its approximate length in millimetres. The base is E27.
What is the difference between a T178 and a G125 globe?
The T178 is tall and narrow and creates a vertical line of light; the G125 globe is a 125 mm sphere that takes up volume and spreads the light in an enveloping way.
How many units should I hang over a long table?
Three, five or seven tubulars in a row, at different heights: they fill the vertical space without blocking the view between diners.
Does it work as the main light in a room?
Its contribution is decorative. For working light levels, combine it with another light point.
