Submersible LED bulbs for swimming pools

Submersible LED bulbs are the part you replace when a pool light stops working. You don't swap the whole fitting or touch any building work: the housing set into the pool shell stays where it is and you simply renew the LED pool bulb inside it. This category brings together the PAR56 format, the standard for pool lights, in white and RGB versions, running at 12V with a stainless steel body.

What a PAR56 bulb is and why the format matters

PAR56 is a standardised lamp size: a disc roughly 18 cm across that fits the pool housings built to that standard. If your light is PAR56, you can change the lamp for one from any manufacturer that respects the dimension, with nothing to rebuild. That is why the format has been on the market for decades, and why it pays to identify it before you buy: measure the opening in the housing, or check the reference on the lamp you are taking out.

White or RGB

The 6000K white version gives a cool, clean light that makes the water look transparent and the floor sharp. It is the choice when the pool is used for swimming and you want to see clearly. The RGB version changes colour by remote and lets you hold a single shade or run through sequences, which is what people want in leisure pools and on terraces where the pool is part of the evening atmosphere. Both share the same body and output: 36 W at 12 V.

AISI 316 stainless steel, IP68 and IK10

Three figures decide whether a pool bulb will last. AISI 316 stainless steel is the grade that handles chlorine and salt without pitting, unlike 304, which is used in less aggressive settings. An IP68 rating certifies permanent immersion, not splashes: it is the non-negotiable minimum for anything that lives underwater. And IK10 measures impact resistance, which in a pool is no luxury: the floor takes knocks from accessories, toys and pool cleaners.

Packs for multi-light installations

A pool rarely has just one light. That is why there are references sold as a pack, with several bulbs and the controller included, designed to fit out the whole pool in one go so that every lamp answers to the same remote. If you are renewing all the lighting, it works out better than buying unit by unit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the bulb without emptying the pool?

It depends on how the housing is fitted. Many installations let you pull the lamp out by the spare cable until it is clear of the water and work on the edge, because the slack is left there for exactly that reason. Others mean lowering the water level. Check your installation before you buy, and always cut the power before handling anything.

Why 12V and not 220V?

Safety. Submerged lighting runs at extra-low voltage through a transformer sited outside the pool shell, so there is no mains voltage in the water. That is why, when you change the bulb, you have to stick to 12 V: a lamp at any other voltage will not work with your transformer.

What is the difference between a submersible bulb and a submersible lamp?

The bulb is the replacement part that goes inside a housing already installed. The submersible lamp is the complete unit, with its own body and wiring, for a new installation or for cases where there is no PAR56 housing. If your light has simply blown, a bulb is what you're after.

Can the RGB bulb be left on a fixed colour?

Yes. The remote lets you set a colour and hold it, as well as running the automatic colour-change sequences. Plenty of owners leave it on white for swimming and save the colour for particular moments.
