Glass pendant lights: the material that defines the light
A glass pendant light is a suspended ceiling fitting whose shade is made of glass. The material is not a cosmetic detail: the glass decides how the light comes out, how much it dazzles and what role the bulb plays. With three finishes, clear, smoked and opal, you get three different results with the same bulb inside, and choosing between them is the decision that carries most weight in this category of decorative pendant lights.
Clear, smoked and opal
- Clear glass: leaves the bulb in full view. The light comes out direct and unfiltered, with a pronounced bright spot. Since the bulb becomes part of the decor, it is usually paired with a filament bulb, whose inner pattern is the attraction.
- Smoked glass: tints the glass and lowers the intensity of the bright spot. It keeps the silhouette of the bulb, but with less direct glare and a more restrained character.
- Opal glass: diffuses the light and reduces glare. The bulb disappears from view and the shade becomes an even luminous surface. It is the most comfortable option when the pendant hangs close to eye level.
The bulb is part of the design
In a clear or smoked pendant the bulb is always visible, so it is worth choosing it carefully. LED filament bulbs in globe or standard formats give that retro look with LED consumption and a service life of 15,000 to 25,000 hours. Warm light at 2700-3000K is the one that best suits glass in dining rooms, bedrooms and hospitality; neutral 4000K works in the kitchen when the pendant also lights the task.
What height to hang it at
This is the practical criterion most often overlooked. Over a dining table, the reference is that the bottom edge of the shade sits above the line of sight of anyone seated, so nobody looks straight at the bulb or loses sight of the person opposite. Over a kitchen island or a bar counter you can go a little lower, because the use is standing and you want to concentrate the light on the work surface. If you hang several pendants in a row, space them evenly about the centre line of the table and keep them all at the same height. Check the cable or chain travel on the spec sheet, because that sets how far you can adjust.
Where a glass pendant looks right
The classic spot is above the dining table, where it marks the centre of the room. In the kitchen it works over the island or peninsula, in groups of two or three units. In bars and hospitality, repeating pendants brings order to the space. And it performs just as well in two lesser uses: as a pendant light on each side of the bed, freeing up the bedside table, and in entrance halls, where a suspended glass piece gives substance to a space you only pass through.
At FactorLED you have glass pendant lights in clear, smoked and opal finishes, in different shapes, sizes and bases, along with the filament bulbs to complete them. If you are unsure between finishes or about the hanging height, write to us and we will help you decide.
Frequently asked questions about glass pendant lights
Which glass finish dazzles least?
Opal. By diffusing the light as it passes through the glass, it hides the bulb and turns the shade into an even luminous surface. Clear glass produces the most direct glare.
Which bulb should I fit in a clear glass pendant?
A bulb worth looking at, because it stays in view. LED filaments are the most common choice: they bring the decorative look with the consumption and lifespan of LED.
At what height should it hang over the dining table?
So that the bottom edge of the shade sits above the line of sight of anyone seated. That avoids glare without blocking the view between diners.
How many pendants should I hang over a kitchen island?
It depends on its length, but two or three identical units is the most common, at the same height and spacing, centred on the axis of the unit.
