RGB LED panel: colour in a large surface format

An RGB LED panel is a large surface fitting, in 60x30, 60x60, 120x30 or 120x60 cm, able to change colour through red, green and blue chips and to be controlled by remote control or over WiFi. What sets it apart from any other colour source is not the palette, but the format: because it emits across its whole surface, it bathes the room in an even, diffuse colour instead of creating a single tinted point of light.

RGB, RGBW and RGB+CCT: what changes in each one

• RGB: combines red, green and blue to generate the colour range. The white it achieves is a mix of the three, so it works very well as mood light and less well as functional light.
• RGBW: adds an independent pure white chip. That lets you use the same panel as white task light day to day and switch to colour when you want, without installing a second fitting.
• CCT: adjustable white from warm to cool, in the usual range of 2700-3000K warm, 4000K neutral and 6000K cool.
• RGB+CCT: brings both capabilities together. Full colour plus white adjustable in temperature, the most versatile combination if the panel is the main lighting in the room.

Rule of thumb: if the panel also has to give useful light for reading, working or cooking, look for RGBW or RGB+CCT. A dedicated white chip reproduces the colours around it more faithfully than a mixed white.

Control by remote or over WiFi

The LED panel with remote control is the direct option: it does not depend on the network and is enough to change colour, adjust intensity and launch the preset modes. WiFi control goes a step further: from the phone app you create your own scenes, schedule timetables and group several panels. If you are going to install several units in the same room or want to automate the switching, the WiFi LED panel is the sensible route.

Where a colour panel fits

It works well in games rooms and gaming spaces, where colour is part of the experience; in meeting rooms and showrooms, to change register according to use; in hospitality, to tell the daytime atmosphere from the evening one; and in teenagers' bedrooms and chill out areas, where you want an enveloping tone at low intensity. The advantage of the panel format is always the same: the colour arrives spread out and without glare.

Installation and figures to look at

Like any panel, it recesses into a modular suspended ceiling or mounts on the surface with the corresponding kit. Before deciding, check three things on the spec sheet: the colour variant, the type of control included and whether it supports further fittings, and the wattage and output if the panel is going to take on the general lighting. The service life of the LED sits between 15,000 and 25,000 hours.

Frequently asked questions about RGB LED panels

What is the difference between RGB and RGBW?

RGB generates white by mixing red, green and blue. RGBW adds an extra pure white chip, so it offers better quality functional white light as well as the full colour range.

Can I use an RGB panel as the main light in the room?

Yes, as long as you choose RGBW or RGB+CCT. Those variants have dedicated white and work as general lighting; a pure RGB is designed mainly for atmosphere.

Do I need WiFi to control the panel?

No. Models with a remote control work without a network and without an app. WiFi control is optional and adds custom scenes, scheduling and handling several panels from your phone.

What does RGB+CCT mean?

That the panel combines RGB colour with white adjustable in temperature, from warm to cool. It is the most complete option: colour for atmosphere and adjustable white for everyday use.
