LED ground bollards: bollard lights that mark out and define the way

The LED ground bollard is anchored to the paving and stands proud, so it does two jobs at once: it provides the light the route needs and it physically marks where people walk. This is the format known as an outdoor bollard light or lit post, and that is where its advantage lies: it needs no wall to lean on. Wherever there is soil, grass, a concrete slab or paving, there is room for it. It is worth being clear: it does not light the space or replace a street light, its job is to mark out the ground and organise movement.

LED bollard light: when it pays off

The LED bollard light pays off whenever the route is open and you need the line to be read from a distance. On a garden path or along the edge of a track, a row of bollards draws the line of the route even when switched off, in daylight. At a car park entrance it marks the edge and stops a wheel climbing onto the flower bed. Around the perimeter of a plot it defines the boundary with no need for fencing. And in the walkway of a business it organises where people come in and go out. That double role, lit and physical, is what no other marker format gives you.

The flush in-ground version: drive-over

When nothing can stand proud, there is the version recessed flush with the paving, rated to be walked on. It sits in the ground and finishes level, so you can walk over it and it does not get in the way of sweeping or of a vehicle manoeuvring. Here, as well as the IP rating, you have to look at two specific figures: impact resistance and crush resistance, because the luminaire is going to take weight directly on top. It is the typical solution for marking the centre line of a crossing, the edge of a wide step or an entrance vehicles drive through. If in your case there is a wall to mount the marking on, look at wall step lights instead.

IP rating, height and color temperature

Out in the weather, IP65 is the minimum: dust and water jets covered. Move up to IP67 if the spot floods, if there is sprinkler irrigation or if the bollard sits in a low area where water stands. On the drive-over versions IP67 is simply what we recommend, because the luminaire is at puddle level. On height: the taller it is, the more ground it covers and the further away it is seen; the lower it is, the more discreet it stays. On color temperature, warm 2700-3000K is the usual choice: with the light point at eye level, it dazzles less.

How to space them along the route

The criterion is continuity, so no stretch is left dark between two light points. Always reinforce changes of direction, narrow sections and changes of level, which is where people trip. On a straight path you can space them further apart; on a bend, bring them closer. And alternate sides only if the path is wide: on a narrow path, a single row reads the route better than two facing rows.
