220V Outdoor LED Strips
220V outdoor LED strips solve one very specific problem: covering a lot of distance with a single piece and no complications. They connect straight to the mains, with no power supply in between, so you only have to bring the current to the starting point and roll the strip out. These are the 220V LED strips for outdoors you will see around property perimeters, fences, long cornices, eaves and large pergolas, where the metres are what count.
Very long runs in a single piece
That is their great advantage. Working at mains voltage, the strip travels dozens of metres keeping the same brightness from start to finish, with no reinforcement sections and no supply points spread along the route. There is no power supply to size, no sheltered spot to find for it and no voltage drop to calculate: all of that belongs to the low voltage world and does not appear here. For a garden boundary, the edge of a roof or the full outline of a plot it means less material, fewer connection points and a much faster installation.
What it accepts and what it does not: cutting by modules
The trade-off is flexibility. A 220V strip cannot be cut wherever you like: it is organised into modules and only allows cutting at the marks set by the manufacturer, which are usually quite far apart. That means measuring first and settling for the nearest module, acceptable on a long perimeter but awkward on a piece of furniture or a step. On top of that, as a general rule it is not usually dimmable: it goes on and off. If you are after softer light or programmed scenes, another family of strips is the answer.
Sealing and installing at mains voltage
Working at mains voltage calls for more care, and outdoors that care concentrates on the sealing. Choose the IP rating according to real exposure: IP65 withstands water jets and is the minimum if the strip gets direct rain, IP67 takes temporary immersion and IP68 permanent immersion. The weak points are never in the middle of the strip, but at the ends and the joints: they have to be closed with an end cap and silicone, with no cut left open and the cable entry protected. It is also advisable for the mains connection to sit in a watertight box and for a professional to carry out or check the installation.
COB or SMD, depending on how the light is seen
The 220V COB outdoor LED strip gives a continuous line of light, with no visible dots, ideal when the route is in full view on a cornice or along the edge of a fence. The 220V SMD outdoor LED strip uses individual diodes and shows the dots, a finish that suits indirect light and long runs where the detail is not seen up close. Secure the strip with clips or brackets along the whole route: outdoors, wind and expansion work against any improvised fixing.
At FactorLED you have 220V outdoor LED strips in COB and SMD, with different IP ratings and the connection and sealing accessories to close every end properly. Tell us how many metres you want to cover and we will point you to the model and the cutting module that fit best.
Frequently asked questions about 220V outdoor LED strips
Does a 220V LED strip need a power supply?
No. It connects straight to the mains through its connection cable, with no driver in between. That is exactly what simplifies installations of many metres.
How many metres can I install in one run?
It allows very long runs in a single piece, well beyond what is usual at low voltage. Always respect the maximum length stated by the manufacturer of each model.
Can it be cut to size?
Only by modules and at the cutting marks provided, which are fairly far apart. If you need to adjust to the centimetre, this is not the right strip.
What IP rating do I need outdoors?
IP65 as a minimum if the strip gets direct rain. For temporary immersion, IP67; for permanent immersion, IP68. And always seal the ends and joints.
