Slim LED panels with motion sensor: the recessed light that comes on by itself
Slim panels with motion sensor are ultra flat LED downlights that recess into a suspended ceiling and carry a built in PIR sensor. They detect a person as soon as they enter the area and switch the light on without anyone touching a switch; when the space empties, the fitting switches itself off after the programmed time. They solve a very common problem: corridors, hallways and washrooms lit for hours because nobody remembers to turn them off.
What sets this family apart is the format. A slim profile downlight with motion detector is barely a few centimetres thick, goes into shallow suspended ceilings and sits flush with the surface, with no visible bulk. If there is no suspended ceiling to recess into, the alternative is a surface mounted ceiling light with a sensor.
How the presence sensor works
A PIR (passive infrared) sensor emits no signal: it reads variations in heat within its field of view. When someone enters that area, it closes the circuit and the LED panel with presence detector lights immediately. When it stops registering movement, the countdown starts and the supply is cut. Four figures worth checking on the spec sheet:
- Range: the maximum distance at which the sensor detects movement.
- Detection angle: the width of the cone it watches, decisive in long, narrow corridors.
- Mounting height: each model is calculated for a specific ceiling height range.
- Switch-off delay: the minutes the light stays on after the last movement.
This is a different kind of detection from a microwave sensor, which works by signal reflection.
What you need to recess the panel
Being a recessed fitting, it calls for two checks beforehand. The first is the cut-out size, which appears on the spec sheet and does not match the external dimension of the frame. The second is the clear depth above the suspended ceiling: the ultra flat profile reduces that requirement a great deal, but you still need room for the driver.
Where they make most sense
They work well in routes and rooms used briefly: corridors and hallways, entrance halls, bathrooms and washrooms in commercial premises, changing rooms, storerooms and office circulation areas. In those spots the light is needed for short, unpredictable spells, so automation avoids forgetfulness and adds safety.
Colour temperature and consumption
For residential circulation areas, warm light at 2700-3000K feels more welcoming. In commercial washrooms, changing rooms and offices, neutral 4000K reads more clearly; cool 6000K is kept for storerooms and technical areas. The service life of the LED is between 15,000 and 25,000 hours, and since the panel only works when someone is there, the hours it stays on drop noticeably.

What is the difference between a slim panel with sensor and a ceiling light with sensor?
The slim panel recesses into the suspended ceiling and sits flush, so it needs a void and some depth. The ceiling light screws to the surface and needs no suspended ceiling. The sensor function is the same.
Can the time the light stays on be adjusted?
On most models yes. The switch-off delay is set on the sensor itself and determines how long the panel stays on after the last movement. Check the range on the spec sheet.
Does the sensor detect through a door or a partition?
No. A PIR sensor needs a direct line of sight to the moving heat source, so doors, screens and partitions block detection.
How much suspended ceiling depth do I need?
It depends on the model, but the ultra flat profile calls for far less space than a traditional downlight. Check the overall height on the spec sheet and leave room for the driver.
