LED battens with motion sensor: the light comes on by itself

An LED batten with motion sensor is a linear fitting with integrated LED and a passive infrared (PIR) detector: it switches on when it detects a person and switches itself off after a spell without activity. It is the answer for areas where nobody remembers the switch or where you arrive with your hands full. How the PIR sensor in a batten works

The PIR sensor picks up the moving body heat of a person within its coverage area. When it does, the batten lights instantly; when it stops detecting movement, a countdown starts and the light goes off. It is not the same as a microwave sensor, which emits a signal and analyses the echo. PIR needs line of sight, and that makes it more predictable: it triggers when someone walks into the room, not when they pass alongside it.

Motion detector or presence detector

A motion detector needs movement to keep the light on: it suits circulation areas, where you walk in, it lights up, you leave and it goes off. A presence detector is more sensitive and also picks up small gestures, so it will not leave you in the dark if you stay still while working. Rule of thumb: an LED batten with presence sensor for spaces where you stop, and a motion detector for walkways and routes.

Range, detection angle and mounting height

These are the figures that decide whether the sensor will work properly in your space:

• Range: the maximum distance at which it detects. In a storeroom a few metres is plenty; in a long corridor or a garage you need several battens.
• Detection angle: the spread it covers. A wide one watches almost the whole room; a narrow one focuses on one area and avoids unwanted triggering.
• Mounting height: the range is calculated for a specific height; fit it lower and the coverage narrows.
• Switch-off delay: the wait before it goes off. Short in through routes, more generous where you are going to stay.
