150 cm LED tubes: more metres covered with fewer fittings
150 cm LED tubes are the longest T8 format in the catalogue: 24W of power to replace the 58W fluorescent, with a G13 base, a bi-pin with 13 mm between pins. Their reason for being is not power, it is reach. Each 150 cm LED tube spreads light along a metre and a half, so to cover the same area you need fewer light points than with short sizes: fewer fittings, fewer fixings and fewer installation hours.
Fewer light points for the same area
A 30 metre aisle in an industrial unit covered with 60 cm tubes demands far more units than the same aisle resolved with 150 cm tubes. As the tube gets longer, the output spreads more evenly and the dark patches between fittings disappear.
That is why 150 cm is the reference size in industrial installations: it is not chosen for consumption per unit, it is chosen for the total number of light points.
Size, power and colour temperature
T8 means a tubular tube 26 mm in diameter, the same profile as the classic fluorescent, so existing industrial fittings accept it with no change of housing. That layout is the one that gets the most out of the 150 cm size, because it removes the lighting gaps between units and makes it easy to aim the light along the direction of the racking or the assembly line.
How to replace a 58W fluorescent
The G13 base matches the one on the fluorescent, so the tube goes into the existing lampholder. As with every other size, the delicate part is the control gear: the starter and ballast or choke have to be removed or bypassed depending on the tube model. In a unit with many fittings, the efficient approach is for the electrician to define the method once and apply it across the whole installation.
Against the 58W fluorescent, the LED lights instantly and at full output, with no flicker or slow start, which matters in areas with presence detectors, contains no mercury, which simplifies waste handling, and lasts between 15,000 and 25,000 hours against the 8,000-10,000 hours of the old tube. On high ceilings, where every change calls for an access platform, that service life is what sets the maintenance cost.
