ST64 LED bulbs: the vintage Edison everyone recognises
The ST64 E27 LED bulb is the shape anyone identifies instantly as the bar bulb. An Edison tubular 64 millimetres across, with an elongated bulb, a pronounced shoulder and a spiral filament in full view: it is the icon of vintage and industrial style, and the model you want when you are after a genuine vintage Edison bulb, with the silhouette of the original lamp and the efficiency of LED. If you have been wondering about a pear shaped bulb but longer and with a retro feel, this is the reference.
What an ST64 bulb is and what size it has
The letters ST come from straight tubular, and the 64 indicates the bulb diameter in millimetres. That is where its characteristic profile comes from: a glass cylinder 6.4 centimetres wide that narrows into a well drawn shoulder before reaching the E27 base, the large 27 millimetre thread. It is not a sphere like the globes or a cone like standard bulbs: it is the silhouette of the Edison lamp. In its LED version it keeps that inner drawing, with the spiral filament running the length of the bulb, and adds between 15,000 and 25,000 hours of service life compared with the 1,000 or 2,000 of an incandescent or halogen.
Where the ST64 is used
It is the bulb of hospitality with character and of industrial interior design:
- Bars, cafes, taverns and cocktail bars, hung from a fabric cable over the counter.
- Restaurants, where several units in a row set the rhythm of the ceiling.
- Barbershops, fashion stores and studios with a retro look.
- Lofts and homes with exposed brick, timber or ironwork.
- Bare lampholders, metal cage fittings and desk lamps.
The point is that it is always installed exposed. Behind a closed shade you would lose exactly what makes it special: the lit filament, which works as a small luminous object before you even weigh up how much light it gives. An LED filament gives less light than an opal LED of the same wattage, between 300 and 800 lumens instead of 800 to 1100, because what you are buying here is the effect.
How to choose your ST64 LED bulb
Colour temperature is the main decision and the one that defines the result. The star tone for this format is 2200K vintage amber, that golden flame light that gives the filament its recognisable look and makes timber and brick feel warmer. If you prefer something more neutral, 2700K or 3000K warm white suits living and dining rooms; 4000K neutral white makes sense in functional uses and 6000K cool white breaks the retro effect. In installations with several units there is no need to go up in wattage: the sum of the points creates the atmosphere. Check whether you need a dimmable version, because only references that say so on their spec sheet will take a dimmer; with an ST64 over a bar counter, being able to lower the intensity as the evening draws in makes all the difference. And do not overlook the glass finish: clear shows the filament in maximum definition, while amber and smoked soften the glare, very useful when the bulb hangs low and sits at eye level.

Frequently asked questions about ST64 LED bulbs
What does ST64 mean?
ST stands for straight tubular, and 64 is the bulb diameter in millimetres. It corresponds to the classic silhouette of the Edison lamp with an E27 base.
Is it the same as a pear shaped bulb?
Not quite. The standard pear shape is shorter and rounder; the ST64 is tubular and elongated, with a pronounced shoulder and the filament on show.
Which colour temperature gives the vintage effect?
2200K vintage amber, the tone that reproduces the golden light of the original incandescent filament.
Does it give enough light to read by?
Its contribution is decorative, from 300 to 800 lumens depending on the model. For reading or working, combine it with an additional light point.
