Outdoor LED wall lights: choose the IP rating according to where you mount it

Outdoor wall lights are luminaires fixed to the facade, the porch wall or the terrace wall to light entrances and walkways in the open air. The decision that weighs most when buying them is not the design: it is the IP protection rating. Getting it right is what separates a wall light that lasts years outdoors from one that fills with moisture the first winter. IP44 under an eave or IP65 out in the open

In the IP rating the first digit is protection against dust and the second against water. An IP44 wall light resists splashes and works well where the luminaire is sheltered: under an eave, on a covered porch or in an outdoor passage with an overhang. An IP65 wall light goes a step further: it takes water jets and stands up to rain falling straight onto it, so it is the choice for exposed facades, open gardens and uncovered courtyards. IP54, in between, covers dust and splashes.

The rule of thumb is simple and it saves you returns:

• If rain falls on the light point, choose IP65 as a minimum.
• If it is sheltered under an overhang or a roof, IP44 may be enough.
• If in doubt, go up a rating: too much protection is never a problem.

Replaceable E27 and GU10 lamp holders versus integrated LED

Outdoor wall lights with a bulb have a standard lamp holder, usually E27 or GU10. The advantage is flexibility: you change the bulb and the luminaire stays in service, and along the way you adjust the output, the beam angle or the color temperature without touching the installation. It is the convenient option if you want warm light at the front door and something more neutral at the garage entrance using the same model.

Integrated LED wall lights have the light source built into the body. They tend to be more compact and better sealed, because they need no access opening for a bulb. The trade-off is that the LED is not replaceable: when it reaches the end of its life, the whole luminaire is changed. On exposed walls, that extra watertightness usually pays off.

Motion sensor for entrances and access points

Many models include a PIR sensor that detects movement and switches the light on as you approach. At the front door of a house, at the garage door or on outdoor steps, an outdoor wall light with a motion sensor solves two things at once: you never arrive in the dark and the light is not left on all night for nothing. When installing it, aim the sensor so it covers the walkway and is not triggered by a moving hedge or by cars in the street.

Up and down effect on the facade

The up and down format, with a beam above and below, throws light in two directions and washes the wall, creating that double cone you recognise on facades and entrance pillars. It is the usual way to set the rhythm of a long wall or to emphasise the main door. Alongside it you have single-beam wall lights, which concentrate the light downwards, and diffuser models, which spread it more evenly.

On installation, three details make the difference: the mounting height, a watertight junction box and sealing the cable entry in the wall so water cannot get in behind the luminaire.
