Outdoors, an LED strip almost never fails because of the LED. It fails because of the ends, the joints and the fixing: a cut with no end cap that lets water in, a badly sealed connection that corrodes, a strip that comes unstuck and ends up hanging off the wall. LED strip accessories are the cheap part of the installation and, at the same time, the part that decides whether it lasts one winter or five. Watertight connectors and joiners

Every joint is a way in for water. An outdoor LED strip connector handles the transition while keeping the seal: there are quick connectors to extend in a straight line, angled pieces to turn a corner without bending the strip, and joining connectors between runs. The rule is simple: the connector has to match the width and the number of contacts of your strip, and its protection has to be up to the exposure. When the outdoor LED strip joint lands somewhere exposed, reinforce it with heat-shrink or silicone.

Cables and rectifier cable

The cable carries the current to where you need it and lets you keep the power supply away from the strip. It needs an adequate cross-section for the run, insulation suitable for outdoor use and protected entries. The rectifier cable is the connection piece for strips that work at mains voltage: it includes the rectifier that adapts the current and comes with the plug ready to connect. Every strip has its own connection cable, so it is worth checking compatibility with the model before ordering.

End caps, glue and sealing silicone

This is the group that gets forgotten most and the one that prevents the most faults. Outdoor LED strip end caps close off the end of the run, that cut where water goes straight into the circuit. Outdoor LED strip glue and sealing silicone do two different jobs: fixing the cap to the profile and filling the joint so it ends up watertight. Apply the sealant on a clean, dry surface and let it cure before powering up. A properly closed end is what maintains the IP rating you paid for.

Clips, brackets and fixings

The factory adhesive helps, but outdoors it is not enough: sun, damp and temperature swings finish off any tape. Outdoor LED strip clips and mounting brackets hold the strip mechanically and stop it sagging or rippling. If it is mounted in aluminium profile, better still: the profile dissipates heat, extends the life of the LED and gives a solid anchor. Space the fixings evenly and add more on curves, corners and changes of plane.

Why does an LED strip installed outdoors fail?

Almost always because of the ends, the joints and the fixing: cuts with no cap, unsealed joints or adhesive that lets go. The LED is usually the last thing to fail.

Which connector do I need for my strip?

One that matches the width of the strip and its number of contacts, with protection suitable for outdoor use. Check as well whether it is for extending in line or for turning a corner.

Will any silicone do for sealing?

Use the one intended for sealing LED strips and apply it on a clean, dry surface. Close the run first with the end cap and then seal the joint.

Do I need clips if the strip already has adhesive?

Yes. Out in the weather the adhesive loses grip with heat and damp, and it is the clips or brackets that keep the strip in place long term.
