G45 LED bulbs in E14 and E27 bases
The G45 E14 LED bulb and its large screw sibling, the G45 E27 LED bulb, are the answer when space is at a premium. The G in the code means globe and the 45 the bulb diameter in millimetres: a little sphere of 45 mm, roughly the size of a golf ball, that fits where a standard bulb sticks out or looks out of place. It is the go to small format for wall lights, table lamps and multi-arm fittings.
What a G45 bulb is and what size it has
We are talking about a round bulb 45 mm in diameter and around 75-80 mm tall including the base. It is made in two screw sizes and that is the key to your purchase: the E14 base is the 14 mm narrow thread, the usual one in wall lights, small lamps and cooker hoods; the E27 base is the 27 mm large thread, the same one used by conventional ceiling lights. Check your lampholder before ordering, because the shape is identical and only the base changes. In finishes you will find opal or frosted glass, which diffuses the light evenly, and clear LED filament, more decorative and with fewer lumens (around 300-800 lm compared with the 800-1100 lm of an opal LED of similar wattage).
Where the G45 golf ball bulb is used
Its compact size makes it ideal whenever the shade is small or the bulb is on show. These are its most common homes:
- Wall lights and stairway lights, where a larger bulb would touch the diffuser.
- Table lamps, bedside lamps and night stands.
- Bathroom mirrors and dressing tables with several lampholders in a row.
- Pendants and multi-arm ceiling fittings, where the small diameter stops the bulbs from touching each other.
- Decorative string lights, terraces and vintage fittings in protected outdoor areas.
How to choose your G45: wattage, colour temperature, dimming and finish
The G45 works in modest wattages and that is only natural: its job is to provide supporting or ambient light. As a reference, a 4-5 W LED is equivalent to a 40 W incandescent and a 7-9 W one to a 60 W, so 4-6 W covers most small lamps and wall lights. On colour temperature, go for 2700-3000 K warm white in bedrooms, living rooms and bedsides; 4000 K neutral white if you are using it on a bathroom mirror or anywhere you need to see detail clearly; and 2200 K amber if you are after that vintage effect with a visible filament.
Confirm whether the model is dimmable when the fitting has a dimmer or intensity switch: a non-dimmable bulb may flicker on that circuit. And decide the finish according to visibility: frosted when the G45 sits behind a diffuser and you want all the light output, filament when the bulb is part of the decor. Either way you gain between 15,000 and 25,000 hours of service life compared with the 1,000-2,000 hours of an incandescent, which is welcome in high wall lights.

Frequently asked questions about G45 LED bulbs
What does G45 mean on a bulb?
The G indicates that the bulb is spherical and the 45 its diameter in millimetres. It is a round bulb of 45 mm, about the size of a golf ball.
Is the G45 made in E14 and E27?
Yes. The same spherical shape is available with the narrow E14 thread of 14 mm and the large E27 thread of 27 mm. Check your lampholder before buying.
What LED wattage do I need to replace a 40 W bulb?
A 4-5 W G45 LED gives light equivalent to a 40 W incandescent.
Is it suitable for wall lights and bathroom mirrors?
Yes, that is one of its most frequent uses thanks to its small diameter. For the bathroom choose 4000 K neutral white if you want to see detail clearly.
