Frequently asked questions about 5V LED power supplies

Why do pixel LED strips use 5V?

Addressable pixel LED strips such as WS2812 integrate a controller chip that requires 5V to work correctly. Using another voltage immediately damages the LEDs and the chip.

What power supply do I need for my pixel LED strip?

Calculate the maximum consumption (approx. 60 mA per LED at maximum intensity) multiplied by the number of LEDs, and add a 20% margin. For 300 LEDs you will need around 18A at 5V (90W).

Can I connect several strips to the same power supply?

Yes, as long as the sum of consumptions does not exceed the nominal power of the power supply. It is recommended to inject power every 2-3 metres to avoid voltage drops.

Are they compatible with Arduino and Raspberry Pi?

Yes. 5V LED power supplies are perfectly compatible with Arduino, ESP8266, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi projects that control addressable pixel strips.
