Office ceiling lights
The surface-mounted ceiling light solves the situation that comes up most often in an office refit: the space needs lighting and the ceiling cannot be opened up. There is no grid to replace and no void to recess into, or the floor is simply in use and lifting tiles is not an option.
We write for the people who buy the material: installers, refurbishment contractors, design studios and maintenance managers. We work with trade accounts, volume discounts and a personalised catalogue, and we prepare the DIALux calculation before you order. All our LED ceiling lights for offices are in Ceiling and LED Surface, and you can open an account through Contact.
Surface-mounted LED ceiling light: the ceiling LED that needs no cut-out
An LED ceiling light screws straight onto the finished ceiling, and that ceiling LED is sorted without touching anything else. It needs no plenum, no access hatch and no coordination with whoever closes the suspended ceiling: mark, drill, connect and it is installed.
Being able to fit that ceiling light without building work makes it the natural answer for a continuous plaster ceiling, for a rendered concrete slab and for any floor where cutting a hole would mean patching afterwards. It is also the lighting solution that causes the least disruption when the work is done while the office is occupied: each point is done in minutes and without dust.
The trade-off is that the fitting is visible, which is why its profile matters. Current models have a very slim body, just a few centimetres deep, so the impression is not of a fixture hanging from the ceiling but of an integrated luminous surface. The brightness is perceived as spread out rather than as a single point. In rooms with low ceilings this difference is decisive: a bulky body lowers the perceived height of the whole room.
Compared with a surface-mounted panel, the ceiling light has the advantage of shape: it comes in round, square and rectangular versions, so you can choose according to what is already on the ceiling instead of imposing a grid.
Round or elongated ceiling lights: which shape suits each room
Shape is not an aesthetic whim: it changes how the room is perceived and how the light output is distributed.
The round version is the most widely used in corridors, toilets, kitchenettes and small rooms. It breaks up the geometry of the ceiling and marks the light point effortlessly; a medium-diameter circular model covers a small room with a single unit.
The square version sits better on ceilings that already have marked lines (access hatches, joints, tracks), which is why it is chosen when you want the whole ceiling to look orderly. In an elongated rectangular format it covers long corridors and circulation areas with fewer units than a row of individual points.
For an enclosed private office, a central ceiling light of the right size is usually enough; in a meeting room, it is better to spread the light over two or three units to avoid the fitting's own shadow falling across the table. A ceiling lamp layout spread out in this way performs better than one large unit in the centre, even if the total light output is the same.
The office ceiling lamps in this family also share an operational advantage: they can be cleaned from a standing position without dismantling anything, which in offices with a lot of airborne dust makes a real difference to maintenance.
CCT, diffuser and colour rendering: the light quality of a ceiling light
This is where you decide whether the room looks good or is merely lit.
Switchable CCT has become the norm for a practical reason: a single product reference covers the whole floor. The same fitting delivers 4000K for work areas, 5000K for a cooler tone or 6500K for technical areas, as well as warm light for reception and break areas. The colour temperature is chosen at installation rather than when ordering, which halves the number of references you need to keep in stock.
The opal diffuser is the part that stops you seeing the bare LEDs. A quality PMMA diffuser spreads the light output in a diffuse, even way, and it is what separates uniform lighting from a ceiling full of bright spots. Without that spread, the direct light from the diodes causes glare and eye strain after a couple of hours underneath.
The third factor is CRI. A high index makes printed material and clothing look as they really are; in reception and in rooms where visitors are received, this is more noticeable than you might think.
And the fourth is flicker, which depends on the power supply. A stable driver eliminates it; a cheap one leaves the light source on the edge of what is perceptible, and it ends up causing fatigue without anyone being able to explain why. That is the difference between a high-quality fitting and a merely cheap one.
Wattages, detection and control: what makes an office ceiling light practical
The wattages in the catalogue range from a small single point to a complete room. A 30cm, 10W unit handles a comms cupboard or a toilet; 18W and 24W cover private offices and circulation areas; and from 36W upwards you move into meeting rooms and small open-plan spaces.
Many models have a power selector on the fitting itself, so the same reference works for two different rooms. That is the most practical feature: fewer references, less stock and fewer ordering errors.
An integrated motion sensor changes how the building is used. In toilets, archive rooms, plant rooms and corridors, the light switches on when someone enters and switches off by itself; our models use infrared detection and, in some series, microwave radar, which works through the diffuser itself and lets the sensor stay hidden. The daylight-sensing version also adjusts switching according to outdoor light levels.
A dimmable fitting lets you reduce the light output when daylight comes in through the façade, and versions with a remote control avoid wiring a wall switch in rooms where there is no chase for cabling. There are also smart LED ceiling lights controlled via an app, and RGB models for multi-purpose rooms where colour is used as a signal.
For dry indoor installations IP20 is enough; in toilets, changing rooms and kitchens you need a higher rating, and it is worth checking before you order because it is the mistake that causes the most returns.
Office ceiling lights compared with other ceiling solutions
It is worth knowing when a surface-mounted ceiling light is not the answer.
If there is an accessible suspended ceiling, a recessed panel sits flush and gives a cleaner finish: you will find them in LED Panels. If the ceiling is continuous but a cut-out can be made, a square LED downlight or round one disappears into the ceiling plane, and that family is in Downlight and Ceiling Lights LED; ceiling spotlights of this type work as individual points, and adjustable spotlights also let you aim the beam at a wall.
When the light needs to come down to the working plane, a pendant lamp does the job better: you will find them in LED Pendant Lamps. And to replace an old fluorescent while keeping the housing, the replacement is a tube: you will find it in LED Tubes, Battens and Waterproof Fittings.
The ceiling light wins when three conditions come together: a ceiling with no cut-out, the need for a slim profile and light that does not draw attention to the ceiling plane. In that scenario no other type of luminaire is as quick to install.
It also wins in a less obvious situation: when you need to make the most of the space in small premises. A fitting flush against the ceiling takes up no room at all, and in offices of only a few square metres that counts.
From minimalist to classic-style ceiling lights
The design of this family has changed a great deal, and today there are two clear styles.
The minimalist style dominates the professional environment: an aluminium body lacquered in white, no visible frame, a slim profile and a matt finish. It is the modern ceiling light that fits into almost any interior without competing with the furniture, and it looks understated without looking cheap.
The retro style has its place in cafés, waiting rooms and break areas: there the fitting complements the décor and provides the discreet lighting a waiting room calls for.
Neutral white light works in both cases for the work area; other tones are reserved for areas where the general lighting does not have to support a task. A well-chosen LED ceiling light lights the workplace without anyone noticing it, which is exactly its role: good lighting goes unnoticed.
The LED luminaires in this range also offer high efficiency and a long service life, which means the fitting installed today will still deliver the same lumen output in a few years' time, without the colour shift of cheap material.
Installation: what to check before you drill
Installing a ceiling light is simple, but there are three checks that save you a return visit the next day.
The first is the fixing. On plaster or plasterboard you need specific cavity fixings; on a concrete slab, a standard wall plug will do. The fitting is not heavy, but it hangs from the ceiling and has to hold for years without giving way.
The second is the junction box. If the existing light point does not match where you want the fitting, you need to decide between rerouting through the suspended ceiling, if there is one, or taking advantage of the fact that the body of the ceiling light covers a fair amount of surface to hide the old box. It is one of the quiet advantages of this type of fitting: it forgives small misalignments that a recessed fitting does not.
And the third is access. The fitting can be cleaned and replaced discreetly from a stepladder, without taking the ceiling apart. On floors with high ceilings it is worth considering this when choosing, because maintenance at five metres costs as much as the material itself.
When to replace the whole ceiling light and when just the driver
In a fitting with integrated LEDs there is no tube or bulb to replace: when the module reaches the end of its life, the whole fitting is replaced. That sounds like a drawback, but it is not really one, because that lifespan is measured in years of continuous use and during all that time there is no maintenance of any kind.
What is worth considering is the timing. If the installation has older-technology fittings spread across the floor, replacing only the ones that fail leaves the building with two different tones and two different brightness levels. Once a fair number have failed, it pays to replace the whole room and leave it uniform.
In large offices a simple approach works well: renew complete zones at a time, starting with the most heavily used, and leave circulation areas until last. That way the cost is spread over time without the result looking patched together.
And before throwing anything away, keep one unit from the previous series. It is the spare that saves a room when a fitting fails and the reference is no longer available.
How office ceiling lights are bought for a whole building
Office ceiling lights are almost always ordered by complete floor rather than by the unit, and it is worth settling two things before ordering: the wattage for each type of room and the colour tone. With that, the whole building stays uniform and future replacements will match.
To open a trade account, send the registration form and your company or sole-trader documentation to our sales email address. With an active account you get trade prices, discounts that grow with volume, a personalised catalogue with your details and the option of a credit line with deferred payment, subject to approval. For resellers there is blind shipping and dropshipping, with the catalogue connected to their online shop.
Shipping costs are calculated in the basket according to weight, volume and zone, and are shown before you confirm; the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla require DUA customs processing and prior contact. The warranty runs up to 6 years depending on the product, with three years as standard, and returns are processed via RMA from the customer area, with return carriage paid by the customer.
Send us the floor plan with the rooms and their uses, and we will tell you how many units of which wattage you need. A correctly sized office LED ceiling light will not fall short the following year, which is when the mistakes of a rushed purchase come to light.
How many ceiling lights each room needs
It is the question we get asked most often by phone and the one that is worst answered by eye. The number of light points depends on three things: the floor area, the clear ceiling height and the illuminance you want on the working plane.
What almost nobody takes into account is height. The same fitting mounted at two and a half metres delivers considerably more light on the desk than at three and a half, because the light spreads over a larger area as the point rises. That is why a floor with high ceilings needs more units or more wattage per unit, even if the floor area is identical.
The second factor is wall colour. A space with white walls reflects part of the light output back and performs better than one with dark finishes or a lot of wooden joinery. In rooms with dark carpet and earth-toned furniture you have to allow for losing part of the planned illuminance.
And the third is use. An archive room that people enter three times a day can make do with a much lower level than a room where paper is read every day. Adjusting room by room is what avoids the classic mistake of buying the same fitting for the whole building and falling short exactly where most work is done.
With those three pieces of information we do the calculation and send back the exact number of units per room. It is a step that costs nothing and saves the urgent second order, which is the one that blows the budget.
Frequently asked questions about office ceiling lights
Can I mount it directly onto plaster?
Yes, that is its natural use. You only need to check the fixing: on thin plaster it is advisable to use specific cavity fixings or to fix to the structure, because the weight of the fitting with its driver can pull through the board.
What diameter do I need for a boardroom?
It depends on the floor area and the height, but it almost always works better to spread the light over two medium units than to place one large unit in the centre. Send us the dimensions and we will calculate it for you.
Does the sensor detect through the diffuser?
With radar models, yes: they detect through the body of the fitting itself and stay hidden. Infrared models need a direct line of sight to the area, so they have to be positioned with the walking route in mind.
Can I change the colour tone after installation?
If the series has switchable colour temperature, yes, using the selector on the fitting. It is best to decide during installation: doing it afterwards means taking the unit down.
Will it cope in a toilet or an office kitchenette?
With the right IP rating, yes. For dry indoor areas the standard rating is enough; in damp areas you need to order the protected version, and we will confirm which one depending on the use.
Can it be installed on a timber or sandwich-panel ceiling?
Yes, with the right fixing and after checking ventilation around the body. On ceilings that build up heat it is advisable to leave the fitting a few millimetres away from the surface or to choose a model with a metal housing, because heat shortens the life of the driver more than anything else.
Do you supply quantities for several identical floors?
Yes, and it is worth telling us the total scope so we can reserve stock. That way all floors are supplied from the same series and the same colour tone, which is what gets lost when buying in unplanned phases.
A final tip for anyone buying from this family for the first time: order a sample unit before the large order. With the fitting installed in a real room you will see in one day what no datasheet explains, and the cost of that test is negligible compared with that of a whole floor chosen badly.
